What is CBSM?

Traditional outreach efforts often focus on increasing knowledge or changing attitudes. While important, these are only two of many factors that influence behavior.

Community-based social marketing (CBSM) is a practical framework used worldwide to design outreach programs that go beyond raising awareness to achieve measurable behavior change.

CBSM is grounded in research showing that behavior change is often most effectively achieved through community-level initiatives that focus on removing barriers to an activity while enhancing its benefits. The framework draws on proven behavior change tools from fields such as social and environmental psychology.

As demand for behavior change grows – across wildlife protection, waste reduction, water and energy conservation, emergency preparedness, and more – we need more agencies applying CBSM well and consistently. The good news? CBSM makes behavior change possible, giving you clear steps to follow and confidence in the strategies you design.
